Back in September 2013 Saracen House Studio and Andrew Appleton teamed up again to run a location lighting weekend at the Windmill Arts Centre near Cambridge. Over two days 12 students got the opportunity to shoot 4 different models on location with a variety of different genres and lighting set-ups. The feedback we had was so good we decided to expand the locations and styles of photography offered by these events all over the UK.
For more information on all forthcoming Portfolio Builder Days, visit our new website which has lots of photos of the venues, models and past events!
Portfolio Builder Days are brought to you with support from:
These are photographic shoot events that you can join all over the United Kingdom where we lay on the venue, models, styling and food for the day and you're shooting in small groups with the idea of getting shots that you can use in your portfolios.
Whilst we're all on hand to provide any assistance with lighting or your shots you may need, these are real world photoshoot experiences. At the start of the day, there will be a short demonstration shoot to give you an idea of the kinds of shots you could create, but you're free to shoot in any part of the location and pick your own styles, lighting and posing of the model as you work one to one.
As these are your own images, not taken under instruction, you're the author of your own images taken on Portfolio Builder Days; As such many people have entered shots they've taken on Portfolio Builder Days into photography competitions with great success. They're also great shots to build up your portfolio of shots on sites like Model Mayhem and PurplePort. Images cannot be used for commercial purposes, for example for selling to stock websites or advertising.
Each venue will present different lighting and shooting conditions, so it's a good idea to bring a range of camera lenses and of course memory cards and fully charged batteries. There will be lighting equipment available for you to use if you need it, however you're also very welcome to bring your own lighting, reflectors, speedlights etc if you wish.
Yes! We'll have a constant flow of tea and coffee, lunch is provided on our full-day events and if you have any specific dietary requirements, please do let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate.
We find that the most productive shoots are those where each person shoots in turn with the other photographers assisting. This also works well for the models, who can focus on nailing that shot in each photographer's shoot.
Each group consists of up to four photographers, so if there are people that you'd like to work with on the day, just let us know and we'll be happy to pair you up. We also offer discounts to book a whole group of four places, so it pays to team up with your friends!
As you're creating your images using your own skills, we believe that you're the author of the work so would be eligible for competition entry. However, please check the terms of your competition to make sure.
Do send us a message or give us a call if there's anything you'd like to know about our Portfolio Builder Days and we'll be happy to help.
